The Naismith Basketball Foundation is set to host its yearly Naismith 3 on 3 Basketball Festival on Saturday, Aug. 11.

Dr. James Naismith, Almonte's native son, is known around the world as the inventor of basketball - something he did in 1891 while employed as a professor at Springfield College in Massachusetts.

Now in its 21st year, the Naismith 3 on 3 Basketball Festival - the largest in eastern Ontario - will see elementary and high school teams, as well as men and ladies' teams "with varying levels of experience" compete.

All teams play at least three games, with five to seven required to win a division. Matches are played rain or shine, but in the case of severely stormy weather, games will be played on Sunday (Aug. 12).

The event takes place on Bridge Street, in front of the Almonte and District Community Centre (arena).

The festival is sanctioned by provincial and national basketball governing bodies, and continues to receive support from the Town of Mississippi Mills and area businesses and residents.

Don't worry about packing a lunch, as there will be a barbecue.

Between games, participants and spectators are encouraged to visit the town's diverse mix of stores, art galleries and other attractions.

The Puppets Up! International Puppet Festival runs the same weekend.

The main street of Almonte will be closed to traffic and transformed into a colourful playground of non-stop activities for the young and young-at-heart.
