Parent urges sidewalk plowing near Caldwell Street school
Posted Feb 16, 2012 By Desmond DevoyEMC News - A Carleton Place parent took his plea for the town to plow the sidewalks near the Caldwell Street Public School all the way to town council last week.
"I am fearful for my children," said Chris Grey of his three children, all under the age of eight. "They have to walk on the road (to get to school). But, as a parent, you're always telling them not to walk on the road."
His main area of concern is for Sarah Street, especially between Woodward and Lake Avenues. There is seniors housing on Woodward Avenue, and other seniors live in the area, so the issue affects not only the very young, but seniors and those with limited mobility.
"The senior citizens on the street have no way to walk downtown," said Grey, speaking at the physical environment committee meeting on Feb. 7.
Coun. Louis Antonakos had been in contact with Grey about the issue.
"We need to have a rationale as to why we are going to plow a street," said Antonakos.
"We've been focusing on the travel portion (of the road) for vehicles," explained public works director David Young. "We've been going out. We've been salting. We've been sanding."
Council voted three-to-two to send the issue on to policy review committee.
