No, the principal hasn't let things slide too far at St. Gregory's Catholic elementary school in Carleton Place, but it's actually part of his school's literacy month programming.

"There are so many wonderful ways of promoting literacy," he said, standing in the school's main foyer in an orange t-shirt and pajama pants.

Tuesday, Feb. 7 was pajama and board game day at the school, where students brought board games from home, and everyone looked like they had slept in. The goal was not only to create a comfortable atmosphere, but also to emphasize reading the instructions and playing cards that go with many board games.

Ruby Smith, 7, enjoys books about animals, and at reading time before bed likes to take the initiative, beating mom and dad to the punch.

"I read to myself," she said, as she thumbed through a French-language book in M. Stephanie Emard's class after morning recess.

The school's 'Book and Blanket' evening will be held in the gym on Thursday, March 1, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will be a literacy presentation, stories, crafts, cookies and milk, as parents read to their children.

Reading Buddy Day will be held today (Thursday), when older students are paired with younger students for 45 minutes of reading. On Wednesday, Feb. 22, parents will be invited in to read with students.

On Monday, Jan. 30, children dressed up as their favourite fictional characters from books and comic books, from Harry Potter to Spider-Man to Eeyore to kick off the month-long reading fun.

Throughout the month, a "reading snowman," stood guard in the foyer. Each time a student completed reading a book, his or her name was added to a snowball, which then built up the snowman.
