Try something new this year

EMC Lifestyle - Nike wants you to "Just Do It," but the Recreation and Culture Department in Carleton Place says "Just Try It."

Created by the municipal unit, the Just Try It program is now in its fourth month of operation.

"We are really hoping for a great turnout in January," says Jessica Smith, the town's community programmer, "since we all know that it is known as the month to get in shape."

She explains the initiative was established to give residents an opportunity to try new fitness or recreational activities.

"They may be deterred from registering (for the activity) without knowing (first) if they like it," Smith continues.

Sessions are free, last for one hour and led by knowledgeable, "amazing" instructors.

"At the end of the session, if you are interested, you can learn how to register for future classes," says Smith. "This is a no obligation, no pressure program. You simply show up for a class and try it."

Upcoming sessions in January are as follows:

An adult Booty Camp Fitness class runs on Jan. 5 (today) at the Neelin Street Community Centre (Upper Hall). The session runs from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

From 6:45 p.m. to 8 p.m., adults can give curling a try on Jan. 6 at the Carleton Place Curling Club (120 Patterson Cres.).

Come out to the Heritage Fitness Centre on Jan. 7 to participate in the Spin Your Butt Off Camp, running 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The centre is located at 2 Costello Dr.

Mixed Martial Arts takes place on Jan. 10 at Tania's Dance Studio. The session for ages 10 and up runs from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the adult lesson is conducted from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
