Dalgity seeks re-election
Posted Jul 22, 2010 By Tara GesnerEMC News - Mississippi Mills councillor Garry Dalgity announced Monday he will seek re-election in October. Dalgity's seat is one of four in Almonte Ward to be filled.
"I gave it a lot of thought before deciding to run for council again," he told the EMC. "While looking over the list of candidates it became evident that there was a number of newcomers vying for a seat at the table and an experienced councillor would be a great asset to a new council - especially with the construction of the wastewater treatment plant coming on line and the main subdivision developments being considered in the Ward of Almonte."
Dalgity is a past councillor for the Town of Almonte.
He retired from the federal civil service in 2001 (Department of National Defence) where he held the position of production coordination officer for Canadian Military Mapping.
Throughout the current term on council, Dalgity has chaired a number of the sub-committees, including: Roads & Public Works (current), Finance, Administration & Policy, Recreation & Culture, Planning & Economic Development and Water & Sewer.
"For the past four years, I have represented council on the board of directors of the Mississippi River Power Corporation, and for the past two years I have been heavily involved with council's engineering consultants for the planning and construction of the wastewater treatment plant," he said. "I am also a member of the Riverwalk Advisory Committee."
If re-elected, Dalgity said he would continue to address the concerns of both the rural and urban residents in Mississippi Mills, and depleting the town's accumulated debt and bringing its reserve funds "up to a respectable level once more" is something he would like to see come to pass.
"Over the past four years, council took advantage of government stimulus and infrastructure grants for capital projects that were otherwise unaffordable, and this was an excellent strategy at that time," Dalgity stated. "But the results of becoming involved with these programs has increased our debt and used up our reserves. I would encourage the new council to pause before taking on further large capital expenditures."
He would also like to insure that the new wastewater treatment plant is built on time and on budget.
The multi-million dollar plant, which includes a septage receiving facility, is expected to roll out in 2012.
"Through the efforts of the board of directors of the Mississippi River Power Corporation, a new hydro electric generating station was built which will provide thousands of dollars in new revenue to the municipality," Dalgity said. "The corporation has been in the process of initiating further hydro electric generating projects and, if re-elected, I will continue to work with the board to accomplish this goal."
No stranger to community involvement, the Almonte Ward councillor is a past director on the Almonte General Hospital, Mills Community Support Corporation and United Way of Lanark County boards, former president (two terms) of the Almonte Civitan Club, and is a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 240.
Dalgity is the father of four children and the "proud" grandfather of six grandchildren.
