Posted Mar 11, 2010 By Charles McLenaghan

EMC Lifestyle - The next meeting of the Smiths Falls Horticultural Society is Tuesday, March 16 at 7:15 p.m. at the Smiths Falls Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 95.

Our guest speakers this month are Joe and Hazel Cook, operators since 1994 of Blossom Hill Nursery, a family owned business near Peterborough. They specialize in the hybridization of delphinium and also have an extensive collection of peonies. They have received a number of awards for their hybrids and will be giving an entertaining presentation not to be missed.

There is a workshop on March 20, 10 a.m. until noon, at the Legion, downstairs in the Canadian Room, on birdhouse making. See Cindy Jungkunz for details.

Our photo contest winners for January were a series of ties, first- Aline Hicks and Suzette Forster, second- Marcel Turpin and Jane Turpin, third- Charles McLenaghan and Anne Siebel. The theme for March is 'Mellow Yellow'. Some reminders to all entrants: the exhibitor must have taken the photo and it must be a first time entry, the photo must include some horticultural material and the photo must be taken in Ontario during the past 24 months. Please submit your photos to Eileen and Barb.

We are fortunate this year in that the AGM for our District 2 is being held at Kemptville College on April 10. It is entitled 'Gardening au Natural'. Deadline for registration and payment is March 20. If interested in attending you may wish to speak to our president Sharon. The proximity makes this a great opportunity to participate in this event with speakers, vendors and the photo contest. The deadline for photo contest entry is March 31. Please follow 'View District Site' link on our web-site listed below for full details.

There are two other events that members should be aware of. Our own first flower show is on April 20. See the year book for details and start grooming your plants for Division I and thinking about your designs for Division II. The theme this year for decorative classes is 'Welcome to Smiths Falls'. On April 23-25 'Ottawa is Blooming' takes place. This is the 12th annual Kanata Garden Show at Kanata Recreation Complex, 100 Walter Baker Place.

Kathleen Lang has done a marvelous job of completing our yearbook and copies are now available at the meeting. Please see the inside front cover for a list of corporate members and the inside back cover for a list of local businesses that have made various contributions. We wish to express our sincere thank you to these businesses for supporting our society.

Lorna Stewart has given the following details regarding our bus trip. Highway coach bus trip to the Montreal Botanical Gardens and Greenhouses on June 19 leaving from Zellers' end of County Fair Mall at 8 a.m. returning to Smiths Falls around 7 p.m. Bring a lunch if you wish. There is a restaurant, which serves light meals on the grounds. We will not stop for supper on the way home. Food and drinks for the return trip can be left in your cooler on the bus while you tour the gardens. Cost includes the bus and admittance to the gardens and greenhouses. Members of Smiths Falls Horticultural Society $35, members of other horticultural societies $40, non-members $45 (this gives you the trip plus membership to S.F. Society).

Payment due Tuesday, April 20. Cheques are to be made out to the Smiths Falls Horticultural Society. As always, you may contact our president Sharon Skrepnek at 613-283-0996 for any information you require.
