EMC News - Area residents will have new opportunities to learn international languages, with the help of the Eastern Ontario French language separate board.

Port Elmsley resident Janice Ling told the EMC she approached the board about language classes for rural residents because "I was hoping that we could bring something wonderful from the city and make it available here."

On March 27 from 9:30 a.m. to noon, registration will open for Mandarin Chinese lessons to be hosted by St. Marguerite-Bourgeoys Elementary School in Merrickville. The classes will be held Saturday mornings starting April 3, and will cover Chinese art and culture as well as speaking, reading and writing in Chinese. Topics for arts and culture studies will include a variety of arts such as paper folding, painting, music, art history, geography and civilization. The classes will take place every Saturday until June 19.

The lessons are free and are available to children aged six to 10 (junior class) and 11 to 15 (senior class). Space will be limited to 15 students per class.

Ling said she hopes a French language program will also be offered and be open to adults as well, along with other international languages in the future.

"We were just completely stunned by their generosity," Ling said of the board's support. "They're extremely proactive in terms of education."
