District 7A seniors to play Pickle Ball
Posted Mar 11, 2010 By EMC NewsEMC News - What is pickle ball? This is the most frequently asked question since the booklets and registration papers became available last week. Booklets and registration forms can be picked up at Almonte and Carleton Place Legions and arenas, Brunton Hall in Beckwith, Clayton and Hopetown General Stores and Nicholson's Sundries in Pakenham.
Pickle ball is played on any type of court, but preferably one that is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long - identical to a double badminton court. It can be played on any location that is suitable for setting up a net and has a smooth playing surface. The game is played using freestanding poles and a net three feet wide and three feet off the playing surface. The game uses an oversized ping-pong paddle and a whiffle ball. This has proven to be an ideal game for people who love tennis or ping-pong and enjoy lots of ralleys. The North Lanark Senior Games Association has ordered a set of Pickle Ball equipment and has made arrangements with Brunton Hall at Black's Corners to hold our District Championship game there. We will be setting up some exhibition games before the gold medal game, which will be held June 3. This is a reasonably active game, the rules are quite simple, and the fun and social time is unlimited.
Other games to be offered include shuffleboard, carpet bowling, darts, cribbage, 4 hand euchre, 4 hand bid euchre, contract bridge, swimming, 5 pin bowling, walking, tennis, bocce, golf, horseshoes, lawn bowling and slo pitch.
If you are 55 or older and interested in playing pickle ball or any other game, pick up a registration form or call Doug Smith at 613-257-7483. The fee to play is $12. If you are registered to play in any of the winter games the summer games are free - for 2010 only. So come and join in the fun!
