Area students victorious in Legion Zone G-6 public speaking
Posted Mar 11, 2010 By Jeff MaguireEMC News - Students from schools in Smiths Falls and Perth dominated in this year's Legion Zone G-6 Public Speaking competition staged Sunday at Branch 192 in Carleton Place.
The four winners now advance to the District competition with an opportunity to move all the way to Area and Provincial contests later in the year. Those who took part Sunday had already won at the local branch level in order to qualify for Sunday's venture in Carleton Place which ran from 12 noon until 3 p.m.
A total of 23 speakers took part in the event, seven each in the Primary, Junior and Intermediate categories and two in Senior.
"There were less participants involved than at the branch level. Only the winner in each category from each branch in our zone took part," says Carleton Place Legion spokesman Mark Bissonette.
"We have eight branches (in the zone) and not all of them participate or have students (entered) in each category," he explains.
"There is a very low turnout for senior (grades)," he points out.
Besides the host Carleton Place Legion Branch 192, the other branches in Zone G-6 are Smiths Falls, Perth, Almonte, Lanark Village, Arnprior, West Carleton and Kanata.
The annual public speaking contest is part of the Legion's Youth Education program which is a major focus for Carleton Place Branch 192.
"It is meant to give young people in our community an opportunity to speak in public," says Carleton Place Legion President Iain Davidson.
"The contestants choose their own topics and speeches are to be the original work of the speaker (student).
"The competition is open to all elementary and secondary school students," Davidson explains.
WINNERS
The four winners in Sunday's Zone competition, with the branches they represented appearing in brackets, were: Primary, Seth Philion (Branch 95, Smiths Falls), Junior, Ben Willmer (Branch 244, Perth), Intermediate, Clarissa Philion (Branch 95, Smiths Falls) and Senior, Katie Schoular (Branch 244, Perth).
As mentioned, the winners from this past weekend's Legion Zone G-6 competition advance to the District event. Anyone who emerges victorious will move on to the Area competition with a chance to qualify for the Royal Canadian Legion's Provincial Public Speaking showdown which will take place later in the year.
