Ultramar donates $8,000 to UCDSB Champions for Kids Foundation
Posted Mar 4, 2010 By EMC NewsEMC News - A major petroleum company donated $8,000 to the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) Champions for Kids Foundation recently to help more kids enjoy a well-rounded childhood.
Staff at Ultramar's Maitland terminal gave a cheque to Champions president David Thomas during a principals' training session at the North Grenville Municipal Centre.
Jim Wagar, manager of the terminal and inventory and cost controller, Susan Peters presented the funds.
"We're honoured that Ultramar has chosen our charity to receive this gift," said Thomas. "This will help many kids in the communities we serve enjoy fuller lives."
The money will be used to help children enjoy sports such as hockey and soccer, experience the arts through ballet and theatre and meet children's medical and dental needs, said Thomas.
The money for the donation comes from a company fund to support children, generated through a golf tournament the oil company hosts each year, said Peters.
As a mother of children who attend UCDSB schools, Peters applied for funding on the charity's behalf, she said.
"I have worked on many parent councils and I see the extra needs children have that can't be addressed by the school or parent council," said Peters. "I was really pleased that this organization exists to help address them."
The announcement came during the launch of the charity's 2010 payroll deduction campaign, which was held at the start of the training session. The charity used the occasion to announce it had raised more than $250,000 since its inception in January 2008 through a variety of events ranging from golf tournaments to a giant garage sale.
Thomas told the crowd of about 130 principals, vice principals and lead teachers gathered for the event that the charity is hoping to generate $1 million to create a self-sustaining fund so Champions can continue to help children in the community.
