EMC News - Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Support Programs (Candlelighters) proudly announces the launching of 'Jenna's Memorial Fund'.

'Jenna's Memorial Fund' was established by the Lang Family, in honour of their daughter - Jenna Lang, who passed away on Sept. 16 following a courageous and graceful battle with Metastatic Alveolar Rabdomyosarcoma.

Jenna dreamed of helping other kids who had been diagnosed with cancer and through this fund, we hope to realize Jenna's dream.

Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Support Programs is a local not-for-profit organization that exists to enrich the lives of children - and their families, coping with childhood cancer. This memorial fund will help families who are experiencing financial distress as a result of their child's illness.

Patient Amenities is a program that helps cover the cost of things like medications not covered by OHIP or insurance, utility bills, groceries, and even rent/mortgage payments. Monies received through 'Jenna's Memorial Fund' will support the Patient Amenities Program.

"We are privileged to work with the Lang Family," says Jocelyn Lamont, executive director of Candlelighters. "It is a wonderful initiative that will help so many families."

FROM THE LANG FAMILY

As we discovered, the impact on families after receiving the news "your child has cancer" is devastating. We all had to deal with the emotional roller coaster of treatments and tests, good days and bad. Life took on a whole new meaning.

Candlelighters was there to help support us during Jenna's difficult battle with cancer. It is estimated that out-of-pocket costs associated with caring for a critically ill child is about one-third of a family's after tax income. No parent should have to choose between going to work and being with their child who is battling cancer. But many do. The financial reality is, bills need to be paid, groceries need to be bought, and mortgage payments come up every month. Just because your child has cancer shouldn't mean having to endure financial hardship that can last long after cancer treatment is over.

It is thanks to Candelighters that not only was Jenna supplied with a laptop computer through their CyberKids program, making it easier for Jenna to cope when she was away from family and friends, but we - her family, also received ongoing support through their many programs. This is why we have chosen to support the Patient Amenities Program within Candlelighters.

We are very excited and pleased to be able to launch this fund and it is our hope, that in Jenna's memory, 'Jenna's Memorial Fund' will be able to assist many local families who are going through what is likely the most difficult time of their lives.

We wish to take this opportunity to thank the residents of the Town of Carleton Place for their support over the past couple of years. As we discovered, you are very generous and caring. Please take the time to visit Jenna's website and read more about 'Jenna's Memorial Fund' - helping kids with cancer.
