Public speakers advance to Zone event this Sunday

EMC News - They put their best foot forward and now the winners of Sunday's public speaking competition at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 192 will take on top finishers from across Legion Zone G-6 this weekend in Carleton Place.

The top public speakers from Carleton Place and area elementary and secondary schools participated in three separate categories during Sunday's local branch event. There were no entrants in the senior (Grades 10-12) section this year.

Last weekend's event was a prelude to the Legion Zone G-6 competition which will be held this Sunday (March 7) at Carleton Place Branch 192.

"The competition on the 7th (March) starts at 12 noon and will run between 2 and 3 p.m.," says Legion member Mark Bissonette who is coordinating the public speaking ventures on behalf of Branch 192.

"There are less participants involved than at the branch level. Only the winner in each category from each branch in our zone will be there. We have eight branches and not all of them participate or have students (entered) in each category," he explains.

"There is a very low turnout for senior (grades)," he points out.

Besides the Carleton Place Legion, the other branches in Zone G-6 include Almonte, Smiths Falls, Perth, Lanark Village, Arnprior, West Carleton and Kanata.

The winners from Sunday's local event, in order of first, second and third, were:

Grades 1-3: Faith O'Dacre, Calvary Christian Academy (Franktown), Megan Peterkins, Calvary Christian Academy and Marla MacInnis, Beckwith Public School.

Grades 4-6: Madeline Beierl, Calvary Christian Academy, Liam Gardiner, Calvary Christian Academy and Gillian Baker, Beckwith Public School.

Grades 7-9: Simon Amirault, Notre Dame Catholic High School, Carleton Place, Cecilia Bowes, Calvary Christian Academy and Melanie Phillips, Beckwith Public School.

Other schools who had competitors entered in Sunday's local competition were Carambeck Public School and St. Mary's Catholic Elementary School, both in Carleton Place.

Winners from this weekend's Legion Zone competition can advance to District, Area and Provincial competitions which take place later in the year.

Members of the public are invited to attend Sunday's competition.

Legion Branch 192 is located at 77 George St. on the north side of Carleton Place. The public speaking will take place in the main upstairs hall of the Legion building.
