Kanata Stallions outscore Carleton Place Canadians 9-7
Posted Jan 7, 2010 By Jeff MaguireEMC Sports - When Kanata Stallions finally broke their record setting 26-game losing streak Friday, Nov. 13, general manager Lou Nistico predicted his young team would eventually make it uncomfortable for clubs in the playoff hunt in the Central Junior Hockey League (CJHL).
Sunday afternoon in Carleton Place that prediction came true as Stallions out-scored the expansion Canadians 9-7. The loss, combined with Kemptville 73's shootout win over Smiths Falls Bears Sunday, saw Carleton Place fall out of third place in the Robinson Division standings. Worse for the home team, the defeat also cost them eighth place in the overall CJHL standings. The top eight teams qualify for the post season.
Kemptville, the league's previous expansion side in 2007, scored with just three seconds left in regulation at Smiths Falls to force overtime. They won 5-4 in a shootout and in the process took over third place in the division and eighth place overall. It was 73's fourth consecutive win and they also hold three games in hand on Carleton Place who has now dropped three straight.
Kanata, who was coming off a two-week Christmas/New Year break, looked very fresh in Sunday's contest played before a season low crowd of 150 at community centre.
But it was Stallions who dominated. They out shot the home team by a wide 39-24 margin. Allan McPherson, Kanata's leading scorer, picked up right where he left off in December. McPherson scored once in each period and assisted on two others to pace the suddenly high scoring Kanata offence. The Kinburn native now has 24 goals and 34 assists and stands ninth in the league scoring derby.
The game was tied 2-2 after 20 minutes with all four goals coming in the first seven minutes of play. The clubs each fired three markers in period two. In the third Kanata exploded scoring four times, including three in a span of two minutes, 59 seconds to take charge of the contest.
Veteran forward Brandon Timm had a goal and two assists for the winners with single strikes credited to Adam Fulton, Kyle Rankin, Ryan Donnelly, Gabriel Parent and Scott Sabourin.
Canadians' got another strong performance from recently arrived forward Brock Plouffe. The former Carleton Place Legion Kings (Junior B) star netted a hat trick and assisted on another giving him nine goals and 16 points in 13 games since being acquired in a trade with Cumberland Grads Nov. 26.
Left winger Richard Stethem scored twice and assisted on three others while Carleton Place scoring leader Tyler Kotlarz had a goal and three assists giving him 21 goals and 38 total points. Zach Rodier netted Canadians' other goal in the second period.
Travis Wilkins allowed seven goals on just 24 shots but still picked up his fourth win in 14 decisions.
Overworked Scott Shackell kicked out 30 shots but yielded all nine goals to absorb the loss.
OUT OF CELLAR
The win, coupled with Hawkesbury Hawks' 12-0 shelling at the hands of Gloucester Rangers Sunday, allowed Kanata (7-32-2-2) to escape last place overall in the 12-team league. With 18 points Stallions are now one up on Hawks. But Hawkesbury holds three games in hand.
Last Tuesday (Dec. 29), in their final game of the 2009 portion of the CJHL schedule, Canadians became the latest victims of the red-hot Brockville Braves. The locals were shelled 7-1 by the league leaders.
Last Tuesday Brockville continued to build on their record with a thorough dismantling of Carleton Place. It was the last of six regular season meetings between the Robinson Division sides and Canadians will be glad to see the back of Braves. Brockville claimed 11 of a possible 12 points in those six face-offs.
Going into last week's game Carleton Place did have the distinction of being the last team to defeat Brockville. Canadians edged Braves 3-2 in overtime on Oct. 27 at Brockville Memorial Centre for their only victory of the campaign over the CJHL high flyers. Braves haven't lost since! They played in Kanata Tuesday aiming for consecutive win No. 23.
Brockville is gearing up to host the Fred Page Cup, eastern Canadian Junior A championship in April.
As host team Braves are automatically entered in the competition.
Playing before just more than 400 fans at Carleton Place and District Community Centre, Brockville totally dominated the new kids on the block last Tuesday.
Brockville scored early and often leading 4-0 and 6-1 at the intervals. Stittsville's Shayne Thompson (a former Kanata Stallion), Mark Williamson and Mike Skakum led the offence with a goal and one assist each. Afterwards Williamson stood eighth in the league scoring derby with 59 points including 38 assists while Thompson was tied for ninth with 57 points including 24 goals. Next up for Carleton Place is a home game with Cumberland Grads of the Yzerman Division tomorrow night (Friday) at 7:30.
