2010 Olympic Torch Relay

Posted Nov 26, 2009 By EMC News

EMC News - In just 23 days from today, the eyes of the world will turn to Mississippi Mills as the Olympic Flame arrives in Almonte as part of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay, presented by Coca-Cola and RBC and supported by the Government of Canada.

"Everyone is invited to come out and cheer on the Olympic Flame on its journey to Vancouver," said Mayor Al Lunney. "On December 13, we're expecting hundreds to turn out for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the Olympic Flame in person right here in our community."

The torch relay will arrive at approximately 10 a.m. as part of a convoy of vehicles, which will include torchbearer shuttles, media vehicles, relay support vehicles and police cruisers. Temporary rolling road closures will ensure the safety of the torchbearers and spectators lining the relay route. The crowd will see a new torchbearer carry the flame every 300 metres through the community as it travels on its 45,000-kilometre-long journey across Canada - the longest domestic torch relay in Olympic history.

To celebrate the arrival of the flame, the community is planning a number of events. These include: Breakfast at the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 240) - 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., Torch Relay - 10 a.m., Hot Chocolate and Cheer - Royal Bank Canada, located at 443 Ottawa Street - 10:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Hotdogs and Hot Chocolate courtesy of the Almonte Lions Club - Almonte Old Town Hall - 11:30 a.m., and, the movie Cool Runnings - Almonte Old Town Hall - 12:30 p.m.
